Yesterday the sophomore class went on retreat at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. NET ministries send 17 missionaries to host the students.
They engaged in witness talks, fellowship, activities, a pizza lunch, and ended the day with adoration and Holy Mass celebrated by Father Patrick Hake.

Mrs. Thornbrugh 's art students recently completed an iconography project. Father David Meinzen came in as a guest speaker and taught the students about the history of Byzantine iconography, and the students did their own research as well. The class then followed a very specific step-by-step process for creating the icons. Every layer has meaning. For example, the class began by painting the boards with 7 layers of white gesso, symbolizing the 7 days of creation. The process is very intentional, and the kids took it very seriously. When they were all completed, Father Patrick came to the class and blessed them.
Mrs. Thornbrugh said, "The icons were a really cool project. It was really special. I think they turned out beautifully, and it was a great learning experience for me too."
The 2D art classes have also been busy working with oil pastels. The dessert drawings were inspired by the artist Wayne Thiebaud. The dragon eyes were inspired by macro photography of animal eyes.

Congratulations to senior Gerber Blanco on receiving the following scholarships!
The QuestBridge National College Match is a highly competitive and selective scholarship program that connects high-achieving, low-income high school seniors with full four-year scholarships to some of the most prestigious colleges in the United States. Students must first be invited to apply by demonstrating exceptional academic performance, leadership, and financial need. Once invited, applicants go through multiple rigorous rounds of applications, including submitting essays, recommendations, financial documents, and ranking their preferred partner colleges. The program partners with elite institutions like Stanford, Yale, Tufts, Princeton, and MIT. Out of thousands of applicants, only a small percentage are ultimately matched with a college, making the process extremely selective and competitive. Gerber Blanco matched with Tufts University and received nearly $400,000!
The Ronald A. Hammond Scholarship is a prestigious, full-tuition merit award offered by the University of Miami to exceptional high school seniors. Named in honor of the university’s first director of minority affairs, the scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity. Through this scholarship Gerber Blanco received $254,000. He was also invited into The Foote Fellows Honors Program, which is a prestigious academic initiative designed to recognize and support the university's most accomplished incoming first-year students. Admission is by invitation only, extended to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, self-motivation, and independent thinking during their high school careers!
