A conversation at our BLHS Career Day in January of 2026 turned into an opportunity six months later.

Richard VanFossen joined our Career Day speakers after a last-minute opening in his schedule. Students heard about a career that’s taken him from six years in the U.S. Navy to earning a Computer Science degree through the GI Bill, leading software projects for the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, and developing technology for African Parks to help rangers combat illegal wildlife poaching. That work even led to an invitation to Kensington Palace to meet Prince Harry.
His presentation clearly made an impression. Freshman Alvino Solis introduced himself afterward, asked to stay in touch, and kept the conversation going.

Richard recently welcomed Alvino and his sister Maria to General Dynamics for a behind-the-scenes tour and a firsthand look at careers in engineering, software development, and defense technology.

This is exactly what we hope Career Day inspires. One conversation can turn into a mentor, a new perspective, or an opportunity that didn’t exist before.

Thank you to Richard for investing in our students, to Bishop Luers English teacher and 1993 alum Emily VanFossen for making the connection, and to Alvino for taking the initiative to introduce himself.
