Dr. Winkelman's dual-credit senior English Classes and Ms. Briggs' Biology students attended a presentation by Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehabilitation Center volunteers this afternoon. The center rehabs raptors, including owls and bald eagles.. They were invited to visit the dual-credit senior English classes to provide some natural context for our current examination of some British Literature poetry in which hawking and falconry figure prominently.
Students have also been learning about the ancient, noble pastimes of hawking & falconry, which are frequently alluded to in authors such as Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare. Later this week the class will read and discuss the poems “Luckes, My Fair Falcon” by Sir Thomas Wyatt (early 1500s) and the nineteenth-century holy sonnet “The Windhover” by Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J.
