This summer, Bishop Luers will be making a change to summer reading expectations for English courses.
Required summer reading assignments will no longer be assigned for standard-level (Academic) English courses. After reviewing current practices and discussing instructional goals, the school has decided to move toward a more flexible approach to encouraging literacy and reading growth during the summer months.
Summer reading expectations will remain in place for Honors, AP Language, AP Literature, and Dual Credit English courses, where independent reading and advanced preparation continue to align with course rigor and expectations. However, sophomore Honors English courses will not have a summer reading assignment due to the structure of those split-semester classes.
While most courses will no longer require a specific summer reading assignment, students are still strongly encouraged to read throughout the summer. English teachers may share optional reading lists and recommendations to support continued literacy development and help students discover books they enjoy.
For families with students enrolled in AP or Dual Credit English courses:

Both are available over the summer to answer questions regarding summer reading expectations and coursework. Summer reading/course information documents were provided to AP and Dual Credit students prior to the end of the school year.
Please note that the reading journal connected to AP and Dual Credit summer reading is optional, but it is highly encouraged. Students will complete a writing assignment in the fall that will require them to reference and reflect on their summer reading selection.
