School Choice Scholarships (Vouchers)

As you might already know, the state’s School Choice Scholarship Program was established in the summer of 2011 to allocate funds for tuition to assist families with children who are interested in attending private schools.   The law provides scholarships for tuition money for students who currently attend a public school, have a sibling in the program, or have special needs or an IEP.

A chart of the income eligibility guidelines for the 2017-2018 school year is a separate tab on this webpage (new 2018/19 guidelines available early 2018).  If your annual income falls below the amount listed for the number in your household, you may receive some of these funds.  The exact amount of your tuition scholarship will be determined by your verified income.  We can also tell you that if your student currently qualifies for the state’s Free/Reduced Lunch Program, then they will qualify for a scholarship.  We will still need documentation to verify your income.

Bishop Luers High School is currently a participant in the Indiana School Choice Program, with 383 students enrolled for this school year.  The state has mandated that our school makes the determination for each family as to their income qualification.  What this means to you is that WE, Bishop Luers High School, will complete the application process for you.  As a parent, you will need to assist us in verifying your income with the guideline chart, and you will need to sign a few forms for us.  It’s that easy!

The School Choice Scholarship application process will begin March 1, 2018, and the application deadline will be  September 1, 2018.  In order to qualify, a student must first be registered and accepted at Bishop Luers.  Once accepted, we will contact you to help you determine if you qualify.  You can contact Melissa Belleville at 260-456-1261 ext. 3027 or by email at

Your student could be eligible for a School Choice Scholarship or SGO award if:
  • Your current private school student has a sibling who received either a School Choice Scholarship or an SGO award last year, AND your family meets the income qualification guidelines.
  • Last year, your student received a School Choice Scholarship AND your family continues to meet the income guidelines.
  • Your Bishop Luers student is a special needs student who currently has an IEP (Individual Education Plan), AND your family meets the income guidelines.
  • Your incoming Bishop Luers student has spent the previous two semesters in an Indiana public school, AND your family meets the income guidelines.
  • You are a current Bishop Luers family who meets the 2017-2018 income guidelines; we can now qualify one child attending any private school for a SGO scholarship award of $500.  Then in 2018-2019, ALL children in the family can qualify for a full School Choice Scholarship IF the family meets the income guidelines in the third column.  To apply for the SGO, a family must complete the FACTS Grant and Aid Application with Bishop Luers or other private school.

SGO Scholarship Fund Donations

Tax Credit:

If your family does not qualify for the School Choice Voucher Program or an SGO Scholarship award, please consider supporting the program. Individuals and corporations can donate to the SGO of Northeast Indiana and receive tax credit of 50% or more.

Donors should consult their tax advisors to determine tax consequences based upon their particular situation. The SGO of Northeast Indiana is administered by the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Fort Wayne/South Bend. Bishop Luers High School will need to solicit funds for the SGO in order to continue to assist our families in need. A one year award of a minumum of $500 to a Bishop Luers student could then qualify them to continue their remaining years in high school on a Indiana School Choice Voucher.

For more information regarding donations to the SGO fund, please contact Kathy Skelly, Development Director at Bishop Luers (260) 456-1261 ext. 3142.
