Marilyn Fech, a religion teacher at Bishop Luers High School, is this year's nominee for the Light of Learning Award, an award bestowed on Catholic school teachers and administrators at the annual Light of Learning banquet during Catholic Schools Week.
Mrs. Fech is a beloved, faith-filled, knowledgeable Bishop Luers instructor who is known as a Catholic model and student motivator.
The nomination form to the Catholic Schools Office notes that Mrs. Fech shows genuine concern for her students, the staff and, in general, 'for' Bishop Luers High School.
Students report that Mrs. Fech is fair and offers motivation. She acts in a Christ-like manner and is very knowledgeable about her subject.
The announcement of her nomination was made by Principal Tiffany Albertson after the all-school Mass on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The congregation, which included Mrs. Fech's family members and friends, rallied around the awardee at the announcement.
One of Mrs. Fech's notable qualities is that she is very caring and always joyful. She has great demeanor in class and is always willing to help when asked. She always has lessons prepared and is careful to ensure that all students learn.
Students offered the following insights about the award winner:
“I could talk to Mrs. Fech about any problem in any class and she would listen and try to help me. She joked with us and was open to discussion, but also was always in control of her classroom. She would not tolerate any disrespect.”
“She has always been enthusiastic and happy to teach. She was understanding and fair.”
“She was a great teacher who related well with students. She was fun to be with and always in a cheerful mood and brightens everyone’s day.”
“She always does her own prayers, but uses our intentions. She is always smiling and tries to keep everyone else smiling or laughing. She is an outgoing person.”
“She is a good role model.”
“She is always positive and optimistic and Christ is visible in her actions and teaching. She is a great role model of joy, humbleness and faithfulness.”
“She puts her trust in God.”
“She’s well respected in my class. I love having Mrs. Fech as a teacher and so do my friends that have her. She doesn’t yell at her students and if she gets annoyed, she actually listens to us if she thinks we’ve done something wrong, and she immediately answers our questions. She is the sweetest and most understanding teacher I know.”
“She wants me to be the best that I can be and actually learn about my Catholic faith, not just go through the motions.”
