To fulfill the graduation requirements of the state of Indiana and Bishop Luers High School a student must earn 48 total credits. 

These 35 credits are required:

  • 8 credits in English

  • 8 credits in Religion

  • 6 credits in Mathematics

  • 6 credits in Social Studies (2 in World History, 2 in U. S. History, 1 in Government, 1 in Economics)

  • 4 credits in Science (2 in Biology, and 2 from a physical science such as Integrated Chemistry/Physics,  Chemistry, or Physics)

  • 1 credit in Computers

  • 1 credit in Health

  • 1 credit in Physical Education

Beginning with the graduating class of 2010, the department of Education has mandated that all physical education classes with be one credit, and not a half, as in the past.  Students must still take two semesters of physical education. This change means that the graduation requirements will increase by one credit beginning with the class of 2010.  

Students need an additional 13 elective credits.                  


Core 40 Diploma 
The Indiana Department of Education strongly encourages all students to meet the requirements of the Core 40 Diploma.  They are as follows:

1.    Required Courses:

English8 credits in English 9, 10, 11, 12
Mathematics: 8 credits of Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II or beyond.
Science: 6 credits in lab sciences
Social Studies:  6 credits distributed as follows:

  • 2 credits in World History

  • 2 credits in United States History

  • 1 credit in Government

  • 1 credit in Economics

  • Computers  1 credit

Physical Ed.: 1 credit
Health
: 1 credit

2.  Choose 8 additional credits from the disciplines above, or from these:

  • Foreign Language: French, Latin, Spanish

  • Fine Arts: Art, Theatre, Music, Choir

  • Career Areas: At least 6 credits in a logical sequence from a technical career area.

3.  Choose 2 or more electives from any course offered at your School

4.    8 Credits in Religion


Academic Honors Diploma
To earn an Academic Honors Diploma from the state of Indiana, a  student must meet the following criteria: 

1.  Earn 51 credits upon graduation, divided as follows:

English: 8 credits (Academic or Honors)
Mathematics 8 credits (including 1 year above Algebra II)
Social Studies: 6 credits including:

  • 2 credits in World History

  • 2 credits in U. S. History

  • 1 credit in Government

  • 1 credit in Economics

Science: 6 credits, including:

  • 2 credits in Biology

  • 2 credits in Chemistry or Physics

  • 2 additional credits from advanced Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Advanced Chemistry

Foreign Language: 6 credits in one Foreign Language, or 8 credits in two Foreign Languages (If only taking 6 credits in Foreign Language students must take 2 additional credits from any approved Academic Honors course.)
Fine Arts:  2 credits from Art, Music, Choir, or Theatre
Computers: 1 credit
Physical Education: 1 credit
Health: 1 credit
Religion 8 credits

2.   Student must have an overall GPA of 9.0 (on a 12.0 scale)

3.   No semester grade below a C (5.0) in any of the required courses.

Weighted Values 

Bishop Luers uses a weighted grading scale. The weight factor is 1 point added only to honors courses or AP courses.  All other courses are unweighted.  The weighting value is added to the grade earned.  For example: a student earns an A- in English 9/Honors, the point value is 10+1.  Weight values for each course are published in the curriculum booklet following the grade level of the course.
